How Sky Scramble works

What is Sky Scramble?

Sky Scramble is a climbing race for one to four players on one screen. Each player climbs a tower of platforms in their own lane while the tower scrolls away underneath – slowly at first, then a bit faster every 30 seconds. Fall out of the bottom of the screen and you are out. The last one left wins the round.

Four lanes side by side in Sky Scramble: Red, Blue, Green and Yellow each climb their own tower, with combo counters and a big AMAZING! announcement
Each player gets a lane with their own floor counter top right; the yellow bar under the combo counter shows how long the current combo stays alive.

The twist: every tower in a round is built exactly the same. Whoever is ahead simply jumped better and didn't get lucky with the platforms. Sky Scramble is made for evenings on the sofa and short breaks – one keyboard, up to four people, no sign-up, no download.

Controls

Up to four players share one keyboard. What counts is the position of the key, not its label – so everything sits in the same place on a German keyboard as on an English one.

  • Red: A and D to run, W to jump
  • Blue: left and right arrows to run, up arrow to jump
  • Green: J and L to run, I to jump
  • Yellow: F and H to run, T to jump (or 4, 6 and 8 on the number pad)

If you play alone, all of these keys work for you, plus the space bar to jump. Gamepads join with the A button, Start begins the round. On a phone you play by touch. Esc pauses, M mutes the sound.

How climbing works

Run-up and jump height

The faster you run, the higher you jump. From a standstill you clear a little over one floor; with a full run-up, more than four. That is the single most important trick in the game.

Walls

Walls close off the tower on the left and right. They don't slow you down: you bounce off without losing speed. Run back and forth between the walls cleverly and you keep your momentum.

Platforms

The higher you get, the narrower the platforms. Every 50th floor is a solid platform across the full width – a short moment to breathe, worth five bonus stars. The sky changes with height too: morning, sunset, dusk, night and finally outer space.

Combos

Jump two or more floors at once and do it again without a long pause, and you build a combo. The yellow bar shows how much time you have until the next combo jump – about two and a half seconds. A combo counts from at least four floors and, depending on its size, is rewarded with GOOD, GREAT, SUPER, AMAZING or INSANE. Every eight floors of a combo earn you a star.

Traps for the leader

In multiplayer, a combo of 15 floors or more sends a trap to whoever is highest right now:

  • 15+ floors: Ice – the platforms get slippery
  • 30+ floors: Storm – the tower jumps up a bit
  • 50+ floors: Mini and ice – the platforms shrink
  • 80+ floors: storm, mini and ice all at once
Sky Scramble split screen: Red, the leader at floor 130, is hit by a storm from Blue, whose lane shows INSANE! and an 88-floor combo
An 88-floor combo from Blue sends storm, mini and ice at once to Red, the leader – the small tags top left show how many seconds the ice and mini platforms last.

Items

Some platforms carry items: stars (from floor 4), a shield that blocks the next trap (from floor 9) and, rarely, a rocket that gives you a huge jump (from floor 13).

Game modes

Alone, Sky Scramble is an endless climb. You chase your record for height and combo, and both are saved. With others, you play to 1, 3 or 5 round wins. If you like, bots fill empty slots at three levels: easy bots only look two floors ahead and slip up more often, hard ones plan up to six floors ahead and steer almost flawlessly.

Each slot holds a player or a bot; clicking a bot's level button switches between Easy, Medium and Hard.

Stars and hats

You collect stars from combos, from stars you pick up and from the milestones every 50 floors. Spend them in the hat shop: from headband and bow through sunglasses, horns, wizard and pirate hat up to crown, halo and the propeller for 400 stars. Each player slot wears its own hat.

Hats you can already afford are highlighted; bought hats are picked in the lobby with each player's left and right keys.

Strategy and tips

  • Always keep moving. Standing still costs you run-up. Start running before you jump.
  • Use the walls. Run into a wall, bounce off and jump at the same moment – that gives you full speed in the other direction straight away.
  • Don't force combos. A missed platform costs more than a broken combo. When in doubt, stay one floor lower.
  • Grab the shield. The leader gets the traps. A shield is worth its weight in gold then.
  • Stay high. The tower speeds up. Building a gap to the bottom edge early gives you a buffer later.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Jumping from a standstill and wondering why you don't get higher.
  • Waiting on a platform too long – the edge comes faster than you think.
  • Running normally on ice. Counter-steer early on slippery platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Sky Scramble online?

No, Sky Scramble is deliberately a one-screen game. You play side by side on one computer, with no server and no sign-up.

What is saved?

Stars, bought hats, records and settings stay in your browser's local storage. If you clear the site data, you start from scratch.

Is the game suitable for children?

Yes. There is no violence, no chat and no purchases – stars can only be earned in the game. M mutes the sound, and the choice is kept after a reload.

Behind the scenes

Sky Scramble doesn't use a single image file: characters, hats, platforms and sky are drawn on a canvas, and the sounds are synthesised live with the Web Audio API. Each floor is only built when it is needed – from a shared seed and the floor number. That is why every tower in a round is identical, no matter how fast someone climbs. The bots use exactly the same physics as the players: before a bot jumps, it plays the jump through in its head and checks whether it will land on the target platform.
